Steering column, replacing

Preparatory work
Removing components
Caution! Vehicles equipped with the dynamic stability and traction control (DSTC) system: When working on the steering or wheel alignment, the adaptation of the steering wheel angle must be set to zero using the diagnostic tool. Test drive according to Test Drive Form (DSTC (dynamic stability and traction control) /brake control module), description .
Remove:
the battery negative cable. See: Battery, disconnecting
the soundproofing panel. See: Soundproofing panel, replacing .
Removing the steering wheel
M6400632 Remove the drivers airbag (SRS). See Airbag driver's side (SRS), replacing .
Remove the lock screw from its "parking hole" in the steering wheel and install it in the contact reel.
M6400633 Remove the steering wheel screw. Ensure that the front wheels and steering wheel are in the straight ahead position. Remove the steering wheel.
Note! Ensure that the connectors do not catch on the steering wheel during removal.
Removing steering column covers
D6100157 Remove the 3 screws.
Pull the steering wheel as far out as possible.
Remove the clip mounting between the covers.
Remove the lower steering column cover.
Remove the seal for the clip mounting at the dashboard.
Remove the upper steering column cover.
Removing the gear selector assembly and steering wheel module
Remove the gear selector assembly. See: .
Removing the steering wheel lock module
D6400438 Disconnect the connectors.
Press in the snap fastener and remove the steering wheel lock unit.
Removing the cable for ignition switch interlock (automatic transmissions only)
D6400372 Remove the ignition switch interlock cable.
Move the ignition key to position I.
Press up the lock facing and pull out the cable.
Removing the cable harness
D6400462 Remove the cable bracket with the cable harness from the steering column. Route the cable harness and bracket through the hole in the dashboard. Place on the floor.
Removing the lower steering shaft joint
R6400803 Fold the floor carpet out of the way.
Bend up the outer section of the steering shaft boot.
Remove the retaining clip around the boot.
Pull the boot up.
Remove:
the screw securing the mounting for the steering shaft in the joint
the joint from the steering shaft.
Removing steering column
D6400375 Remove the 4 x screws holding the steering column in place.
Pull the steering column backwards from the three guides.
Remove the steering column.
Transferring components
D6400439 Drill out the security screws holding the steering wheel lock.
Transfer the steering wheel lock.
Install the ignition key in the steering wheel lock.
Check that the key is in position I and that the locking lug on the steering wheel lock is down.
Install the steering wheel lock against the cap on the steering column.
Install the new security screws.
Tighten the security screws until the screw heads break off.
Installing the steering column
Note! Lubricate the steering shaft friction surfaces and the steering column bearing. Use low temperature grease, P/N 1161417-9 (30 grams). Lubrication is important to avoid noise from the steering column.
Note! Check that the rear seat rails are undamaged.
Hook the steering column into the three guides.
Install the screws. Tighten to 25 Nm. Tighten the rear screw first.
Installing the lower steering shaft joint
Install the steering shaft on the lower steering shaft joint.
Install:
a new screw. Tighten to 25 Nm.
the steering shaft boot and snap ring.
Fold back the carpet.
Installing the cable harness
Pull up the cable harness and bracket. Install on the steering column.
Installing the cable for ignition switch interlock (vehicles with automatic transmissions only).
Set the gear selector lever to P position.
Move the ignition key to position I.
Press the cable into the ignition switch and feel to see that it sits correctly.
Remove the ignition key and check that the gear selector lever is blocked in P position.
Installing the steering wheel lock module
Remove the ignition key.
Install the steering wheel lock module.
Connect the connector.
Installing the gear selector assembly and steering wheel module
Install the gear selector assembly. See .
Installing steering column covers
Install:
the lower cover for the steering column. Secure the seals for the switches
the 3 screws.
Press the seal in towards the dashboard in the upper steering column cover.
Press the lower cover into place in the upper cover.
Note! Check that the seals for the switches are positioned correctly throughout the operation.
Installing the steering wheel
Route the connectors through the hole in the steering wheel one by one.
Install:
the steering wheel
the center screw. Tighten. See Tightening torque:Summary of tightening torques for specific components .
Remove the screw from the contact reel and place it in the “parking hole”.
Install the drivers airbag (SRS). See Airbag driver's side (SRS), replacing .
Finishing
Ensure that the steering wheel turns easily and that the steering lock functions.
Install the battery lead.
Test drive the vehicle.
Check that the steering wheel is in the correct position.
Adjust the steering wheel position if necessary. See Steering wheel position, adjusting.
